Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) is an essential ingredient in cement - based tile adhesives for several reasons:
1. Water retention
Cement - based tile adhesives need to maintain an appropriate level of water during the curing process. HPMC has excellent water-retention properties.
It can prevent the rapid evaporation of water from the adhesive. For example, in a construction site environment where the air is dry or there is good ventilation,
without a good water-retaining agent like HPMC, the water in the adhesive would quickly dry out. This would lead to incomplete hydration of cement, reducing the adhesive strength
and durability of the tile adhesive.
2. Workability improvement
HPMC can significantly enhance the workability of the tile adhesive. It gives the adhesive a smooth and creamy consistency, making it easier to spread evenly on the substrate.
This is crucial when installing tiles, as an adhesive with good workability allows for precise placement of tiles. For instance, when tiling a wall with small mosaic tiles, the smooth
and easy-to-spread adhesive helps to ensure that each tiny tile is properly adhered and in the correct position.
3. Open time extension
The open time of an adhesive refers to the period during which it remains workable after it is applied. HPMC helps to extend this open time. This gives the installer more flexibility and time
to adjust the position of the tiles. For example, in a large-scale tiling project, if the open time is too short, the tiles may set before they are properly aligned. HPMC-containing adhesives can avoid
such problems
and provide enough time for the installer to complete the tiling work
accurately.
4. Adhesion enhancement
HPMC can improve the adhesion between the tile adhesive and both the
substrate (such as concrete, plasterboard) and the tile itself. It
helps to fill in the microscopic pores and irregularities on the
surfaces of the substrate and the tile, creating a better bond. For
example, when tiling a floor with slightly uneven concrete, HPMC in the
adhesive can penetrate into the small cracks and holes of the concrete,
strengthening the connection between the adhesive and the substrate and
ensuring that the tiles stay firmly in place over time.
